Buying books in Tokyo

books.jpg

I’m trying to be good and save dosh at the moment, but every so often I have a relapse and splurge on books. A couple of days ago I had just a moment of weakness in Junkudo, but at the last moment common sense kicked in and I whittled my shopping basket contents down from about 10 (inc. big glossy photo collections) to 3. I think I did pretty well.

Anyway, I just thought I’d share my 3 favourite places to buy books in English in Tokyo. (more…)

Dead domain blues

Thursday, February 28th, 2008

A mix-up with my old hosting meant my dr-rogg.co.uk domain didn’t get renewed this year, hence the outage for a couple of days. Ooops.

On the plus side, Nominet have Fool’s Gold by the Stone Roses as their hold music, which I first listened to on my first ever electronic album about 10 years ago. When they finally picked up I nearly told them to bugger off and never disturb me again mid-groove.

And who rather charmingly suggests the Super Mario Theme replace Kimigayo as Japan’s national anthem.

Pink Sakura Doraemon for cherry blossom season

Monday, February 18th, 2008

Sakura DoraemonAhh, cherry blossom season. How I love your pretty pink petals, obligatory work-related parties and subsequent liver damage, and seasonal product placement opportunities.

Fortunately, I’ll be able to cuddle a new pink Doreamon plushie to ease my battered guts. This two-tone pink and white “Sakura Doraemon” made his debut at the SK Japan booth at the AOU 2008 arcade game expo over the weekend, and also comes in keyring form. (more…)

Go go otaku news!

Friday, February 15th, 2008

While flicking around on the Mainichi’s Japanese site today, as I am wont to do, it occurred to me that there is some interesting geeky news on here, news that gets something in the range of bugger all exposure in English.

So here is my attempt to redress the situation. I’m going to try and translate articles a couple of times a week, taken from places like Mantanweb. Despite the fact that stuff in there is old. Hmmm.
